I've got an opportunity to do something really cool - get Linux into YASB (Yet Another Small Business (tm)). The law office my mother works at has a receptionist who does the occasional odd job, but they'd like to be able to get a little more productivity out of them. This'll also be good, because they'll be able to pay a little more, and therefore attract people likely to stay longer.
They have an extra computer that they are going to put at the receptionist's desk, and since I'm their informal "tech guy", it's my gig to get everything set up for them. I asked them for the opportunity to put Linux on this system, as they've had exceptional results with the office gateway allowing them all to connect to the internet over the same phone line at the same time. It's the one system in the entire office that doesn't require me to walk them through something at least once a week. So I have permission to put down a linux desktop for their secretary.
Here are their requirements (that I need advice on) They want to be able to print envelopes - what program does well at printing envelopes? second, they'd be willing to buy a new printer for this, but would rather not. What cheap printer works well with Linux? minimum setup? (I've never had much luck with printing and linux)
That's about all I REALLY need, but I'm open to any suggestions. I'm setting it up with Debian and Gnome. Galeon and Mozilla (even though I prefer skipstone), Gnumeric for spreadsheets
- ah - that reminds me - how does one set default "save" formats to something different? I'm trying to set up interoperability for them so I need either tab delimited or comma delimited format (or something else standard that excel reads) and I need to make it default for both word and gnumeric. looking to do the same for rtf for Abiword and word.
So - that's not TOO much, is it? of course it is. but I like to think that if I can show them that having a Linux desktop doesn't mean that you have trouble working with other people's systems then I can start moving EVERYONE into Linux. and if i can show THIS success to other groups, I can start moving other people into it. I know a few small non-profits that'd love to be able to save money on licensing fees. but they keep saying "but we have to use the same thing everyone else uses!" anyway - any help y'all can give would be immensely appreciated.
