Small businesses in Queens are getting a boost thanks to a new $7.5 million
State Assembly grant that will establish a partnership between the City
University of New York (CUNY), LaGuardia Community College, small businesses
and New York State to create jobs, internships and revenue.
The grant, announced on Oct. 16 by State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, will
allow CUNY to establish the first in a network of "high-tech incubator
facilities" throughout New York State at LaGuardia Community College in Long
Island City. The "incubators" will allow small businesses to obtain space at
CUNY schools in order to help their businesses grow and create jobs.
A CUNY official explained, "It's called an incubator because it warms and
nourishes business . . . Basically, the State Dormitory Authority will build
low-cost, wired space at LaGuardia and other CUNY schools that will be
occupied by local small businesses. The schools will provide the space, as
well as administrative, legal, financial, managerial and funding support . .
. The businesses will grow and provide jobs, internships and research
opportunities for students and faculty members, which will help the borough.
In the meantime, CUNY gets put into an equity position and can make money."
The LaGuardia "incubator" will try to attract businesses in fields that
LaGuardia specializes in, such as new media and computer science. Businesses
interested should contact LaGuardia, which will also scout potential
The grant is expected to launch over 200 businesses and create more than 5,000
jobs over the next five years.
