Folks,
When Jeremy invited me to become part of this list, he said its=20 purpose is "to counter shill and FUD activity" along with a=20 Dilbertesque comment about "empowering" somebody or other.
Well, the Open Source bill (HB 2892) that was introduced into the=20 Oregon legislature two weeks ago has been scheduled for a=20 committee hearing two weeks from now. Here's your chance to=20 counter shill and FUD activity!
If you have expertise to offer the State of Oregon on how this=20 bill can benefit State government and can make the trip over=20 here, please contact Rep. Barnhart's office (contact info below)=20 and let him know.
A copy of the bill can be found at:
http://www.leg.state.or.us/03reg/measures/hb2800.dir/hb2892.intro.html
As you can see, the bill addresses several of the problems in the=20 software marketplace: vendor lock-in, privacy issues, et. al. =20 But we're selling the bill primarily on the basis of the cost=20 savings it will provide state government.
Not only does this play well in a year with massive budget=20 problems, it also very neatly challenges Micro$oft's new FUD=20 strategy, in which they claim that Open Source software is more=20 expensive than theirs. What we really need at this committee=20 hearing is credible experts who can provide hard data showing how=20 much money was saved in a conversion from a Windows-based=20 environment to an open source environment.
Jeremy promised me some people for this, but now that the time has=20 come he's not answering my emails in this regard! Do any of you=20 (other than Paul Nelson, who is already on Rep. Barnhart's list)=20 care to participate?
Thanks,
Ken Barber Lead author, HB 2892 (Oregon)
