I'mm willing to discuss this only if your going to open your mind
and understand what is actually happening in the market for internet
access. Otherwise, it's just a flame fest that is not worth the time.

There are more options for internet access than just Cable and the
Phone Monopoly. Furthermore, there would be even more options if not
for the legal meddling of Cable television and the Phone company, and in
other countries there is a much wider and faster variety of options because
markets are open.

Fiber was laid out by Verizon over a decade ago and then they refused to
implement it because of the Telephone Commnications act which insisted
on the Telephone utilities to open up their monopoly on the last mile.

They then proceeded to rip out all the fiber to sell lower band width
DSL, which they were then forced to allow access to as well.

Now, because of their constant lobbying, they have a loophole with
"FIOS", which is a locked down version of fiber. So they are trying
to dismantle ASAP the copper.

ISP providers on the copper network was forced open and you can buy
from SPEAKEASY, ACE, COVD, and a bunch of others. But the infrastructure
is being torn up so that they can kill you with FIOS.

Meanwhile, if you want real internet access, say anything over 1.1 megbits
with 5 IP addressses and and no filtering, your still stuck with 1970
technological solutions, COPPER DSL or T1 lines, which providers
still have to purchase from Verizon under some level of local and
Federal government regulation. WHY? Because the jerks at Verizon
still have a legal monopoly on the last mile.

I'd die before I give them a nickel. As was pointed out that for my
DSL line, with 8 IP addresses and IP access fro Covad, Covad still needs
to but the juction from the line in the street to the juncture in the
house. But at least I' not paying verizon for it. To them, I don't
even exist and that is fine with me. And the minute a crack opens up
and one of the dozens of technologies is implimented by Covad which
can reach my house, I'm dumping the copper. But until then it is
still a fixed market and there is NO real competition.

That might be the case at your specific address, but I'd be looking at
satilite hookups under that situation if the DSL wasn't available.

The whole US economy is being held back and blackmailed by this crap.
I sympathise with you, but I'd never buy FIOS from a company that
has screwed my family for decades like this.
