Unlike the flashier desktop edition Ubuntu is better known for, Ubuntu Server is a lean, mean, no hand-holding OS. We'll take a dive into what makes Ubuntu Server a great choice for the datacenter, as well as on EC2, and other virtualization platforms. We'll talk about the release of 10.10 Server and what is planned for 11.04. We'll also take a close look at “cloud-init”, an open source package written by Canonical's Scott Moser, that allows you to dynamically configure your EC2 and private cloud instances on startup. This allows you to maintain fewer server images that are capable of bootstrapping themselves to handle a wider variety of tasks and roles. However, he has found true FOSS bliss in the Ubuntu community and will never go back to the dark side.
