They're not though, it just seems that way if you're one of them (I used
to be). From what I read, the only growth an otherwise declining LIRR
has seen in a long time is in reverse commuting, ie, bringing people
west to east during the morning rush hour.

Pay in Manhattan is still better than local pay, but not by all that
much anymore, and what it boils down to is at some point as a commuter,
you do the math again, this time accounting for the expense of working
in Manhattan, and the life that the MTA sucks out of you, and the $400 a
month (currently) they charge you for the privilege, and all the time
commuting, and you realize that the job on Long Island that doesn't pay
as much, really is a better deal than the one in the city with bigger
numbers on the check. I've been on both sides of this one, and until
you've done close to 10 years as a LIRR commuter to/from Suffolk County,
you can't really appreciate what I'm talking about, because as an
occasional commuter, I wouldn't dream of driving into the city, but as a
daily commuter, the LIRR is slow death, and I'd rather drive it every
day than endure the services of the MTA five days a week. The people I
knew who commuted from much closer to the city didn't seem any less
longing for death than I was either.
