Are you using mint? There is an interesting background story about Mint and the fit/pc.
In the last 6 months there has been a cresendo of complex and obstructive changes in the computing world that has suddenly, at least to me, swept to shore all at the same time.
These include:
Broken systemd Broken EFI Broken Thumbdrives Broken Gnome Broken X11 My broken laptop which I dropped just one too many times Broken modperl Broken BASH Broken SSL Broken freedesktop
and that about covers it ....
