Hi there friends of mothur,
I hope your summer is going well and that you=E2=80=99re having fun collect=
ing
and playing with the data for your Next Great Paper! Something that may
come in handy is developing your skills with the R programming language.
This is a great tool for doing simple and complicated analyses,
generating graphs, and making your analysis more reproducible for you
and others that hope to build upon your work. I will be holding a
Crashcourse in R Workshop for Microbial Ecologists from August 28-30
near the Detroit airport. The workshop is geared towards people with
interests in microbial ecology that would like to learn R or to learn it
better. So you shouldn't feel like this isn't for you if you are a
beginner. I assume no previous computer programming experience. Also,
although I will present material that uses mothur output for the basis
of our work, I do not assume or require any mothur background and you
should be able to generalize the material to output from other programs.
The workshop is an even blend of lecture/discussion and hands on use of
R with real data and typically uses mothur output files as a starting
point. Here is a rough outline of the content that past workshops have
covered.
Ordination type plots
Stripcharts and box and whisker plots
Line plots
Barcharts
Subsetting data
Reading and writing data
Basic parametric and non-parametric analyses
Literate programming tools for writing reproducible manuscripts and reports
Please let me know if you are interested and would like more information
on fees and how to register. The workshop is being filled on a first
come, first served basis. This workshop has really grown in popularity
over the last several years to rival my mothur workshop.
