We are about to change how our mail system works (yes, again), in
order to eliminate a recent and annoying class of spamlike mail which
many of you have recently been inundated by. This change will affect
aliases using the form "whatever-at-YourUserName.users.panix.com".
If you use these aliases, please continue reading. You may need to
take action (though it will be trivial), or risk losing mail sent to
the aliases.
If you don't make use of such aliases or have no idea what they are,
you won't be meaningfully affected by this, aside from potentially
receiving fewer bogus bounce messages. You may, in fact, stop reading
here (and if you're curious, do read on, and consult
https://www.panix.com/help/plusaddr.html for further details).
Many of you have recently seen a large number of bounces from
undeliverable mail, allegedly sent from one or more of your
"whatever-at-YourUserName.users.panix.com" aliases, which you did not
send. The aliases were forged by the spammer to hide their tracks,
divert blame, and foist the consequences of bad deliveries on someone
else. We call the resulting flood of bounces "backscatter".
While it's not possible to prevent spammers from forging addresses, we
can at least eliminate the part of the problem you've been seeing.
On June 20th, we will be disabling *.users.panix.com aliases by default,
and mail sent to those aliases will bounce.
For those of you who do want to continue using these aliases (which we
still consider an extremely useful tool for handling incoming mail),
we are providing options for configuring them as much or as little as
you choose.
In https://config.panix.com/shell, you'll now find the section "Manage
[username].users.panix.com Aliases. This gives you three options:
-"None" - Discard mail sent to all addresses
-at-[username].users.panix.com. Note that this will not affect mail sent
to your regular panix address. *THIS IS THE NEW DEFAULT.*
-"All" - Accept mail to all possible aliases ("wildcarding"). This is
how the aliasing is currently working; be aware that this setting is
certain to cause more backscatter to be accepted on a daily
basis. You can, of course, use filtering (procmail or otherwise) to
junk anything unwanted.
-"Custom" - Create a list of specific addresses
-at-[username].users.panix.com; mail to addresses not specified here
will be bounced. Aliases can be added or removed here as needed.
YES, YOU CAN OPT OUT OF THIS CHANGE. To keep the current/old alias
behavior, use the "All" option above. If you aren't able to log into
config.panix.com for any reason, let us know and we'll fix that for
you and make that change on your behalf.
If you want to accept any specific users.panix.com aliases, you'll
need to set those up at https://config.panix.com/shell, or contact us
to do it for you NO LATER THAN 06/19/2016.
