RM: Even though I don't anticipate encountering this issue, I read it carefully and tried to absorb and comprehend it. I will also put it in my Linux reference binder. So it was not wasted !
( I have stale but thorough experience in IBM / Sperry Univac / DEC mid - large systems, but relatively new to Linux- striving to be an "educated user" rather than a deep tech expert,
or on the other end of the spectrum just a simple user who knows nothing about how it works or how to resolve problems when they arise ).
RS: You were not at the event in Greenpoint, which was rather good, plus seeing the things in the neighborhood ( small chic restaurants, etc. + the large bierhall where the people went after the lecture ). Only negative was one of the speakers who just had to make sure we knew that the internet infrastructure is run by "privileged white guys in a comfy workspace somewhere".

You know, instead of writing the above, it would have been a superb idea
to say something like 'Thank you for refocussing on the real problem and
providing a solution via example /etc/source.list lines and package-pinning
settings for /etc/apt/preferences. _I've now read those carefully._
I appreciate and have learned from the hard work you put into that --
even though (actually) I've now changed my mind and am going to figure
out how to adjust GRUB to boot the OS I want. But I wanted to reassure
you that your trouble wasn't wasted, because I'm sure I'll need it
That would have been a good thing to say because, y'know, I'm sure
you'll need what I wrote later. But instead, the impression I'm getting
is that you _didn't_ bother to read my careful explanation, which makes
