Hi James & Company.
Yes, If you could arrange that ny.pm virtual meeting that would be very hel=
pful.=C2=A0 (No longer a fan of Zoom.=C2=A0 Is Skype viable?)=C2=A0 I could=
use a pointer or two on how to use irc.perl.org for a discussion.
There were a few terms I could not follow that were being casually used in =
the slide-show:- Indirect Object Syntax- Smoke Testing
I noticed you discussed some issues with function prototyping.=C2=A0 I trie=
d it in a few areas but found little reason to use them.=C2=A0 As you point=
ed out, all scalars look alike, be they numbers (of various flavors), strin=
gs, or references.=C2=A0 I had tried it so I could overload the function or=
method name, as we can do in C++.=C2=A0 It didn't work; I got the multiple=
definition error.=C2=A0 Yes, prototyping is good for making sure the calls=
have sorta the right parameter types but to be truly useful they must faci=
litate function overloading (i.e. signatures) and enforcement of more stric=
tly specified data types.=C2=A0 That is, not just scalar or reference but m=
ore precise numeric and character types.
Question: Is Perl7 planning to support data types like integer, float, stri=
ng, etc?=C2=A0 That would go against the rugged individualist style of the =
stereotyped Perl developer but I wonder if this is a factor that detracts f=
rom the popularity of Perl.

Last week I had the opportunity to give a remote presentation on Perl 7=20
to the Toronto Perlmongers.=C2=A0 The slides from that talk are available h=
ere:

http://thenceforward.net/perl/talks/toronto-perlmongers-20200730/slides/

Unfortunately, the webcasting technology they were using had a limit of=20
10 attendees (which we did not know until we saw that people were unable=20
to get into the meeting.=C2=A0 I'm offering to compensate for that in one o=
r=20
both of two ways:

A. If people in ny.pm wanted to organize a virtual meeting, I could=20
simply repeat the presentation.

B. Have a virtual meeting on IRC.=C2=A0 If, *after going through those=20
slides*, you want to have more discussion about Perl 7 as software and=20
project, I'd be happy to set up a time to discuss this on IRC.=C2=A0 It=20
appears that on irc.perl.org you can create a channel by just letting=20
yourself into the room.=C2=A0 So we could create a #ny.pm (or such) channel=
=20
and squat there some evening and toss questions back and forth.

Also, ...

We're fast approaching a stage in the Perl 7 Project where we need more=20
people looking at the code base and the changes we've made.=C2=A0 What we'r=
e=20
looking for is not so much "code reviewing" as "code understanding,"=20
that is, understanding exactly what we're trying to do and then looking=20
at the code to determine whether we've done what we set out to do.

To be a "code understander" you would need:

* Familiarity with Perl 5 -- which, I would suspect, the overwhelming=20
majority of readers of this list already have;

* Basic familiarity with git and an account on github.com; but ...

* Familiarity with the Perl core distribution is helpful but not essential.

If you have free time, particularly over the balance of this month and=20
next, and would like to make a tangible contribution to the forward=20
development of Perl, please ping me off-list and I'll go into greater=20
detail.

Thank you very much.
