Hello friends
I've been made aware that we have lost several of our friends since Covid-19 started. One I've known about for a while because of the mail bounces, and the other is a bit more surprising, but not too surprising.
Our dear friend, who was also President of NYLXS for a while, Michael Richardson, died during Covid-19, perhaps because of it, I don't know the details. Michael Richardson August 23, 1952 ~ October 10, 2020 (age 68). This is his obituary. I think it is interesting and typical of NYLXS members that Michael never stopped educating himself, even to the end.
https://www.frankrbellfh.com/obituary/Michael-Richardson Michael Richardson Obituary Michael Lawrence Richardson was born August 23, 1952 to Suester Mae Blanding Walters Richardson and King Osteen Richardson in Manhattan, New York. During his lifetime, he lived in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. He departed this life on Saturday, October 10, 2020.
Michael was raised with his mother, father, two brothers and a sister in a loving Christian home in Brooklyn, New York where he attended public schools, graduating in 1970 from Boys’ High School. He then graduated from Hunter College; studied at the University of Phoenix (Bachelor of Science, Class of 2015); studied at Alchemy Study 2016; and studied at USUI Reiki 2019.
One of his first jobs was working at Hunter College in the Lighting and Staging Department. Later, he worked for Downstate Hospital as Supervisor of Customer Billing, then New York State Liquor Authority as Supervisor of the Licensing Department and Supervisor of the Records Department. He was a dedicated Representative and Monitor for the Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. (CSEA) Local 1000 Union.
Michael had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid photographer and music lover. He had a sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. He was an entrepreneur, marketing various health products. In recent years, he was engaged in Internet Marketing of various products.
Michael belonged to two churches; in his youth, the Bethel Baptist Church of Brooklyn, and as an adult, the Unitarian Universalist Church, First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn for thirteen years, serving as an usher and social activist. As an adult, he enjoyed the wonderful worship services and warm fellowship with his fellow congregants.
Michael was a member of the Freemasons’ Phoenix Lodge 205, Brooklyn. He was a member for fifteen years, and served as Worshipful Master and Treasurer.
Michael was preceded in death by his father King O. Richardson, and his sister Sharon Anita Richardson. Those left to cherish his memory are: his mother Suester M. Richardson; two brothers: Osteen King Richardson and Rev. Kenneth O. Richardson (Donna); four nieces: Amber Richardson, Ariella Richardson, Keara O. Richardson and Kea O. The other member who we will miss was also at the very first meeting of NYLXS, Ruth Diane Shanen. Ruth was a great friend and active volunteer. Before NYLXS she made the Casandra Free Software calender, which was diffuclt to keep up with at the time, which LUNY, NYLUG, and NYLXS events keeping everyone busy.
She attended our first meeting: http://www.mrbrklyn.com/images/ruth_at_nylxs.jpg
This is Michael and Ruth in my backyard as we barbequed for an installfest

This image, btw, is of Fernando, who also seems to have disapeared off the grid and may no longer be with us. http://www.mrbrklyn.com/images/installfests_barbeque/dsc01910.jpg
and this is Mark - who might also be gone. He was in bad physical shape the last I spoke to him http://images.mrbrklyn.com/installfests_barbeque/2007/nylxs_installfest_2007.jpg?width=640
Ruth seems to have died more alone, which is sad. Last we met she was taking care of her mother. That was obviously a long time ago and she died without an Obit

Anyway - that is the round up.
I've considered doing a new meeting. I think we should. I've been using Artix Linux of late and for nearly 3+ years or more. It is based on arch but is devoid of systemD. It runs my servers and my workstation. I am thinking of doing a demo with it. NYLXS is serving the as a mirror for the OS and I am thinking of gettting a new development server for them.
It is time. COVID is over and we should come out of our shells.
