"The Prince of Mermaid Avenue" Wins Best Documentary Feature

*Congrats to the Film's Director Charles Denson and Jimmy Prince--the Star!

Charles Denson's film "The Prince of Mermaid Avenue"

was awarded Best Documentary Feature at the 9th Annual Coney Island Film
Festival
.
The film is about Jimmy Prince, owner of Major Meats on Mermaid Avenue,
who retired in February after 60 years at Coney's oldest butcher shop.
The film project began with Mr. Denson's daily visits to Major's and his
audio recordings for the Coney Island History Project's Oral History
Archive
.
Mr. Denson has been filming the documentary about Mr. Prince and his
customers for the past three years. "The Prince of Mermaid Avenue"
premiered on October 2, the opening night of the festival. In a question
and answer session after the screening, Mr. Denson talked about the
genesis of the film, which is based on more than 60 hours of raw footage.

Jimmy Prince by Denson

Jimmy Prince told the audience how he's been keeping busy since his
retirement. He spent summer weekends working as "Distinguished
Historian" at the History Project's exhibition center under the Cyclone,
sharing his Coney Island memories with visitors. The good news is that
Major's renowned and much missed "murder burgers" are now available at G
& S Meat Market on Avenue U, where Mr. Prince enjoys working part time.
"The Prince of Mermaid Avenue" will be screened again soon in Coney
Island. Stay tuned to our website for upcoming news.

souvenir book
The
History Project's award-winning website
has
some new interactive features designed to provide a more interesting
experience for visitors. You can rank, tag and comment on photos and
videos in our Searchable Online Collection
.

logging in.

The Wards
The
Oral History Archive

on our website now allows visitors to browse interviews by theme, place,
period and people, as well to rank, tag and comment.
One of the interesting new interviews in the archive is with Jack Ward
,
grandson of Coney pioneer William J. Ward
,
who was inducted into the Coney Island Hall of Fame last year. Mr. Ward
talks about his family's place in Coney Island history. He begins with
his great grandfather's purchase of beachfront property at 12th Street
and Surf Avenue in 1879 and continues through his grandfather's
participation in the development of the Half Moon Hotel and the Wonder
Wheel.
