Raj is a good friend of mine and he's in the middle of a migration of
a server. If someone has some spare time, he can use a little bit of
help.

Honestly, Grub is a black box to me as well, and I'd never used it with
a virtual instance (or vmware). I'll see what research I can come up
with tomorrow. But no doubt that if it can't move from the initrd
run time image to the real file system then the bootloader is the
problem

I understand the principles but the specifics keep advancing and
virtualization makes it completely different.

Either the MBR is not being specified correctly or
bootload record which isn't on the MBR isn't seeing the
drive designations correctly.

In a nutshell, the OS bios reads the MBR which points to a start up
program, GRUB in most cases, which has instructions that it follows.

Those instructions say, = Fetch and load a kernal image from partion
xyz.

The image starts a kernal instance and ram disk and loads up a bunch of
modules to run hardware. Then at the last step it swaps out the ram
disk and loads the true root partition. That seems to be were your
having your failure.
