Systems Operator 1 - Accelerator Operator (Cornell University)

(google map)

compensation: competitive - dependent on experience
employment type: full-time
Systems Operator I
(Accelerator Operator)

Cornell University seeks an individual to train to operate the particle
accelerator complex and to assist with a variety of projects at the
Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences and Education
(CLASSE). The laboratory is a world leader in accelerator design and
x-ray research in biology, chemistry, art history, and new materials
discovery. The laboratory complex consists of several experimental
setups, the largest and most prominent one being a mile-long tunnel
beneath the building that holds the Cornell Electron Storage Ring
(CESR), which provides x-rays for experiments done at the Cornell High
Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS).

The Systems Operator position entails work mostly focused on the CESR
section of the lab. CESR consists of three connected particle
accelerators: the linear accelerator, the synchrotron, and the storage
ring. It is the job of the Operator to keep all three elements of the
machine running, to diagnose breakdowns and to determine the best course
of action for initiating repairs.

With such a large complex, there are many elements to be maintained by
several groups within the lab. The electronics, magnet, computer,
vacuum, cryogenics, RF, and water systems all have dedicated staff who
are in charge and on call 24/7. When not operating the machine, it is
the job of the operator to assist any of these groups that may need help
with their current projects.

We seek individuals with experience operating laboratory test equipment,
diagnosing problems in a technical setting, and following protocols and
procedures to ensure a safe working environment. These individuals will
be part of a team that covers the facility 24/7 with shared shift and
weekend work, including holidays.

Qualifications and Education Requirements: Formal training beyond a high
school diploma of 1 to 2 years, 2 years of college coursework,
technical/vocational degree, or Associate's degree, or equivalent.
Ability to express thoughts clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability
to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands. Ability to work
effectively and cooperatively with others.

Preferred Skills: Bachelor's degree in a scientific or technical field.
Two years demonstrated experience and/or training in the use of
electronic test equipment or sophisticated scientific experimental
equipment, as well as experience in a facility with computers.
Experience troubleshooting electronic circuits. Basic proficiency with
Linux and basic programming concepts. Experience in drafting and/or
mechanical design and construction.
