3.3 The parietal eye in reptiles
The parietal eye of lizards originates from the anterior part of the
pineal territory, making it a bona fide homologue of the parapineal
gland. In addition, both the parapineal gland and the parietal eye
project to the left habenula. The structure of the parietal eye
strikingly resembles an eye with a dorsal lens and a ventral retina.
This parietal eye contains all the cell types described in the pineal
gland: PhRs, PNs, and glia (Engbretson & Anderson, 1990; Engbretson &
Linser, 1991). Interestingly, the lizard parietal eye expresses
parapinopsin and parietopsin, which are not found in their pineal gland
(Wada et al., 2012). Along the same line, the parietal eye plays a
unique role during thermic regulation in reptiles (see Section 1.3),
suggesting a great extent of functional specialization for the main and
accessory pineal organs.
Parietal Eye Field (PEF)
The parietal eye field (PEF) is the homolog to the area lateral
intraparietal (LIP) in monkey, and lies in the posterior parietal cortex
in both banks of the medial part of the intraparietal sulcus (Figure
9.10) (Müri et al., 1996; Van Essen et al., 2001; Müri, 2006). In
contrast to the FEF the PEF is more involved in the triggering of
reflexive saccades to suddenly appearing peripheral visual stimuli
(Pierrot-Deseilligny et al., 2004). Microstimulation suggested a role
for saccades to specified targets in spatial coordinates (Thier and
Andersen, 1996).

I am not expert enough in anatomy to fully understand this without more
research but it is astonishing to me that reptile literal have a third
eye with a lens and a retina hidden under their scaled on the base of
the skull to detect light. And furthermore, mammals also have parts of
the brain similarly responsive to light.
