Subject: LIU Lock Out

Eric Krasnoff
Chair of Long Island University
700 Northern Blvd
Brookville, NY 11548

Dear Mr Krasnoff

I=E2=80=99m a student at LIU/Brooklyn in the Masters Degree program for Com=
puter Sciences. I=E2=80=99ve attended LIU since 1986 when I entered and gr=
aduated the Pharmacy Program. I also attended the PhD Program in Pharmaceu=
tics and
now I am 2 years into my Masters in Comp Sci. In my time within the
Comp Sci program, I=E2=80=99ve often wondered whether the program should be=
accredited. The moral with the faculty and student body has been often ve=
ry negative. When I asked about course work which is normally part of Comp=
uter Science programs, areas such as discrete mathematics, compiler theory=
, and parallel programming, I=E2=80=99ve been told that our school doesn=
=E2=80=99t have a student body that can do these classes. Other times I=E2=
=80=99ve been told that I shouldn=E2=80=99t expect such a quality education=
from LIU, and switch to an engineering institution like PolyTech, or that =
our students don=E2=80=99t =E2=80=9Cprogram=E2=80=9D.

What has kept me going is that the response to these opinions has been that=
the Chair of the department, in collaboration with faculty have pushed the=
se intensive subjects back into the program. They offered compiler theory =
last semester and this semester offered Parallel programming in C. The Net=
working class added an extensive section on cryptography. There has been a=
greater push for quality and it has been appreciated.

That is until now.

You fired your faculty leaving me signed up with a parallel programming cla=
ss without a qualified faculty. Furthermore, the same unqualified professo=
r has said that he will not teach the Special Topics in
Programming on a graduate school level. I am in disbelief that after
all this work, we are now working with an unqualified professor who is unfa=
miliar with the advanced topics that we are pursuing in Graduate School, an=
d refuses to even make an effort to ramp up to the topics.
Instead he is planning on teaching on a Community College level these advan=
ced classes.

I=E2=80=99m tired of fighting both the negativism and the politics that boi=
l over at this university. I=E2=80=99m calling on you to immediately inter=
vene in the current labor dispute and save the schools accreditation and re=
putation. It is time to replace all the recrimination and Nay Sayers with =
a =E2=80=9CCan Do=E2=80=9D attitude, and that starts with ending the lock o=
ut right away.

There is nothing to be gained with this lock out at this point, even if the=
re ever was. The union is in no position to go on strike after protesting =
how they love their jobs and students, as they have been with such verbiage=
of pretentious doting for the last 2 weeks. This labor dispute has to sto=
p upsetting and leaking into the classroom NOW.

It is a farce for the administration to say that the student experience is =
not being interrupted. That deceit must also end NOW. It is malicious, ca=
lculating and cruel. The administration needs to apologize to the student =
body for the lock out. And the faculty must also likewise make such apolog=
ies and rededicate themselves to the welfare of students which they ostenta=
tiously venerate, instead of disrupting
semesters for their pockets and egos. And then you need to reschedule
the lost weeks of real education. You will need to figure out how to expen=
se that, without putting it on the backs of students. The students are the=
innocent bystanders here. They are tied to the school because of a combin=
ation of student aid regulations, visa issue and other arraignments. Whoev=
er wins this labor dispute, in the end students lose.

FIX THIS MESS.
