Thanks for your interest in attending a Crashcourse in R Workshop for Micro=
bial Ecologists. The workshop will run from August 28-30 near the Detroit =
airport. The workshop is being filled on a first come, first served basis.=
The workshop is geared towards people with interests in microbial ecology=
that would like to learn R or to learn it better so you shouldn't feel lik=
e this isn't for you if you are a beginner. I assume no previous computer =
programming experience. The workshop is an even blend of lecture/discussio=
n and hands on use of R with real data and typically uses mothur output fil=
es as a starting point. Here is a rough outline of the content that past w=
orkshops have covered.

Ordination
Stripcharts and box and whisker plots
Line plots
Barcharts
Subsetting data
Reading and writing data
Basic parametric and non-parametric analyses

Basics: Each day there will be a lecture and discussion interspersed with=
hands-on activities. The session will run from 9 to 5 with a lunch break =
in the middle.

To bring: It is important that you bring a laptop to the workshop. While =
it would be helpful if you came with R pre-installed, it is not that import=
ant since we can do this at the workshop. We will be using R studio as a p=
rogramming environment. People often find it helpful to bring along their =
own data to play with after they have mastered the examples I provide. Peo=
ple also find it helpful to bring a notebook for taking notes during the le=
cture components. Of course, a willingness to learn, questions, and a good=
sense of humor are essential!

Hotel: The workshop will be held at the LaQuinta Hotel (formerly the Lexi=
ngton Hotel; 30847 Flynn Dr; Romulus, MI), which has a free shuttle to and =
from the Detroit Airport (DTW; this is an International hub for Delta). We=
have a block of rooms being held for you at ~$89 per night plus tax that y=
ou will need to cover on your own. You can make a reservation by calling 7=
34-721-1100 and telling them that you would like to fill a reservation with=
in the Schloss block. Included in that rate is a continental breakfast and=
included in the cost of the course is a lunch for each day. There are a n=
umber of restaurants in the area where you can have dinner.

Costs: The cost of the three-day workshop is $600. I will save a seat fo=
r you when you make a $100 deposit; the full payment is due at the beginnin=
g of the workshop. The easiest way to place your deposit is to use www.pay=
pal.org to send the deposit to pdschloss-at-gmail.com. You need to either pay=
the balance or make arrangements with me by the start of the workshop.

and playing with the data for your Next Great Paper! Something that may co=
me in handy is developing your skills with the R programming language. This=
is a great tool for doing simple and complicated analyses, generating grap=
hs, and making your analysis more reproducible for you and others that hope=
to build upon your work. I will be holding a Crashcourse in R Workshop for=
Microbial Ecologists from August 28-30 near the Detroit airport. The works=
hop is geared towards people with interests in microbial ecology that would=
like to learn R or to learn it better. So you shouldn't feel like this isn=
't for you if you are a beginner. I assume no previous computer programming=
experience. Also, although I will present material that uses mothur output=
for the basis of our work, I do not assume or require any mothur backgroun=
d and you should be able to generalize the material to output from other pr=
ograms. The workshop is an even blend of lecture/discussion and hands on us=
e of R with real data and typically uses mothur output files as a starting =
point. Here is a rough outline of the content that past workshops have cov=
ered.

mothur] Upcoming R workshop for Microbial Ecologists

Hi there friends of mothur,r class=3D"">
I hope your summer is going well and that you=
=92re having fun collecting and playing with the data for your Next Great =
Paper! Something that may come in handy is developing your skills with the =
R programming language. This is a great tool for doing simple and complicat=
ed analyses, generating graphs, and making your analysis more reproducible =
for you and others that hope to build upon your work. I will be holding a C=
rashcourse in R Workshop for Microbial Ecologists from August 28-30 near th=
e Detroit airport. The workshop is geared towards people with interests in =
microbial ecology that would like to learn R or to learn it better. So you =
shouldn't feel like this isn't for you if you are a beginner. I assume no p=
revious computer programming experience. Also, although I will present mate=
rial that uses mothur output for the basis of our work, I do not assume or =
require any mothur background and you should be able to generalize the mate=
rial to output from other programs. The workshop is an even blend of lectur=
e/discussion and hands on use of R with real data and typically uses mothur=
output files as a starting point.  Here is a rough outline of the con=
tent that past workshops have covered.

Please let me know if you are interested an=
d would like more information on fees and how to register. The workshop is =
being filled on a first come, first served basis. This workshop has really =
grown in popularity over the last several years to rival my mothur workshop=
.

Thanks,
Pat Schloss
