The [[ syntax is not in POSIX, but many shells implement it
in some form. It goes back to the Korn shell.

> why in this example do I need [[ ?

The [[ syntax suppresses file expansion, splitting, and the treatment of
< and > as redirection operators.

If $dir contains spaces, its expansion will not be split into fields, as
if it were quoted.

If $dir contains globbing characters like *, these will not be
processed; again, as if it were quoted.

If we change [[ ]] to [ ], we also have to change $dir to "$dir",
otherwise we are introducing a quoting bug.

Because [[ suppresses < and > from being used as redirection operators,
they become available as expression operators. So this is possible:

[[ 1 < 2 ]] && echo less

if we switch to [ ], we have to put quotes around the "<", otherwise
it expresses an input redirection from a file called "2". Or else we
have to switch to the POSIX-conforming less-than operator -lt.

Ah. Yes, I forgot about the quoting, which should always be done, just
in case the name contains spaces, etc.

http://www.tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/testconstructs.html explains the
extended test, which allows things like the &&, ||, <, and > operators,
which work within a [[ ]] test, despite giving an error within a [ ]
construct.

However, the example above does work with just [ instead of [[, so
the question is based on a false premise.

No, for the upthread given reasons it does not work correctly with [ ... ],
since the correct behaviour depends on the actual value of $dir. Try a
directory with spaces to see it fail.
