> Hello All,
>
> On Monday, November 14, 2005, the Committee on Technology in
> Government, jointly with the Subcommittee on Public Housing, held a
> hearing entitled, "Oversight: Updating Technology in New York City
> Public Housing." The goal of this hearing was to assess the current
> state of technology in public housing run by the New York City Housing
> Authority (NYCHA) and to evaluate NYCHA's fiscal year 2006 plan as it
> pertains to bringing updated technologies to its residents. To read
> the briefing paper from this hearing, please go to:
> http://webdocs.nyccouncil.info/attachments/69588.htm?CFID=1016714&CFTOKEN=96433909. Witnesses who testified included Hugh Spence, Deputy General Manager for Community Operations at NYCHA, Avi Duvdevani, Deputy General Manager for Information Technology at NYCHA, representatives from Per Scholas, Computers for Youth, Mount Hope Housing Company, the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN), Tropos Networks, GigaBeam Corporation, the Urban Cyberspace Company, and the Pratt Center for Community Development. I would like to thank the chair of the Subcommittee on Public Housing, Council Member Diana Reyna, for joining us at this hearing, and Counsel to the Subcommittee, Andrew Sterrer, for all his help in preparing for the hearing. I would also like to thank the witnesses for attending and providing us with great testimony and insight into the dearth of technology currently available to public housing residents. To this end, the Committee on Technology in Government and the Subcommittee on Public Housing will continue to work with NYCHA in order to bring updated technologies directly to residents.
>
> The Committee's next hearing will be on Monday, December 12,
> 2005, at 1 P.M., Council Chambers, City Hall. This will be a second
> hearing on proposed Int. No. 625. Int. No. 625 creates a broadband
> task force that will look at how to bring affordable broadband to all
> New York residents, nonprofits and businesses. The legislation
> (http://www.nyccouncil.info/issues/report_act.cfm?mtfile=Int%200625%2D2005) is in the process of being substantially revised. The aim of the revisions would be to make the proposed task force permanent, public and transparent, reporting to the Mayor and the City Council as well as to the general public.
>
> Please note that the hearing scheduled for Monday, November 28,
> 2005, has been postponed indefinitely.
