The execution plan for a SQL statement can often seem complicated and hard to understand. Determining if the execution plan you are looking at is the best plan you could get or attempting to improve a poorly performing execution plan can be a daunting task even for the most experienced DBA or developer. This two-part webcast series examines the different aspects of an execution plan, from cardinality estimates to parallel execution and explains what information you should be gleaming from the plan and how it affects the execution. It offers insight into what caused the Optimizer to make the decision it did as well as a set of corrective measures that can be used to improve each aspect of the plan. Part 1 covers the best techniques for generating an execution plan, understanding cardinality estimates and the different access and join methods. While Part 2 covers join orders, partitioning and parallel execution.

Using a Pl/SQL Table API to Implement SmartDB/Thick Database Principles

Applications developed using APEX, ADF, MAF, JET, MAX, VBCS/VB Studio, Java, JavaScript, or any other development framework can benefit from using the development approach known as "Thick Database" (SmartDB). Thick Database uses the power of Oracle PL/SQL and SQL to centralize business logic in database code. One key technique that can be used to implement these principles is the Table Application Programming Interface (Table API).

This session provides an overview of the Thick Database approach and explains its benefits such as reduced cloud database costs, simplification of user interface code, and more efficient and secure applications.

The session then focuses on the code components and strategies in the Table API technique used to isolate code that accesses data. The presentation explains a number of methods for generating a large part of the Table API code and shows examples of generated code as well as code that calls the Table API code.

Application UI Design in a Mobile Device World

Mobile app design has raised the bar for the design of modern business applications. Business users now expect the speed and intuitiveness of mobile apps to be in the applications they run at work. In addition, modern business applications may need to support multiple display devices and their mobile capabilities such as orientation change.

This session examines why our application user interfaces using popular development environments--such as APEX, JET, MAF, MAX, VBCS/VB Studio, JavaScript, Java, ADF, or even Oracle Forms--need to comply with principles used in mobile apps. It then reviews standards available from sources such as Oracle Alta UI for guiding user interface design of new or existing applications so they fulfill expectations for device support and intuitiveness. The discussion includes the role of and principles used for the Oracle Redwood theme.

The presentation also shows examples that demonstrate mobile design principles, and it closes with suggesting resources for further study.

Uses of Row Pattern Matching

With 12c came the ability to search efficiently for patterns within your rows of data using a syntax similar to searching for character patterns in strings with regular expressions, but instead of searching text, it searches for data patterns.

This is useful for pattern recognition like finding ups and downs in values over time (e.g., stock tickers) or transaction patterns in accounts that may look like fraudulent behavior. But it can also be used for grouping consecutive data, finding gaps, finding or merging overlapping periods, calculating number of children in hierarchical data, and more.

Introduced in Oracle 18, Polymorphic Table Functions (PTFs) are the next step in the evolution of table functions. They provide detailed PL/SQL access to the inner workings of SQL query functionality (parse, open, fetch, and close) to create flexible data access and control. This session will be presented in two parts and begins at the surface of PTFs but quickly delves into the details to give attendees everything they need to create effective PTFs.
