I think that I might have had a problem similar to this trying to get
AbiWord to run on Debian, but I am not sure if it is the same problem.
Might have to do with fonts. The fix for AbiWord was to insert the line
'Load "type1"' in the Modules section of XF86Config-4. Then X loaded
the correct fonts. Don't know if this is it, though. And that is a
big "don't know."
