Topic: Building a Virtual Workplace
Web-enabling Legacy Applications and Providing
Secure, Remote Access.
---------------------------------------------------

Speaker: Tamar Newberger,
Tarantella, Inc.

Introduction:
-------------

Some time ago, SCO (The Santa Cruz Operation) split into two
companies. One half became part of Caldera Systems, the other
half formed Tarantella, Inc.. Tarantella, Inc. promotes a variety
of web-enabling software technologies. Our speaker, Tamar
Newberger, is a highly technical speaker who has addressed Unigroup
previously on the topic of: The Future of Unix: Development of the
64-Bit Unix Operating System.

Meeting preamble: Short discussion about new Mandrake Linux release.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
---------------------

First off, Chase has found us a NEW location to hold our meetings.
Note our NEW meeting location listed above! We are now a few
blocks North from where we used to meet.

This is the FIRST time we will be meeting at this new location,
please be patient with any first-meeting problems that we may
experience.

* IN ORDER TO PASS THROUGH SECURITY AT CHASE, WE NEED YOU TO RSVP
* PRIOR TO THE MEETING DAY, SO WE CAN GET YOUR NAME ON THE ATTENDEE
* LIST. ADVANCE REGISTRATION AND PHOTO ID ARE REQUIRED!
* RSVP DEADLINE 24-JUL-2002 13:00. <<<< PAY ATTENTION, DEADLINE!

Please RSVP if you know you are attending or if you think you may
be attending. This will help us arrange for a letter to security
for all of Unigroup. It will also help us to determine the correct
amount of food and refreshments.

To REGISTER for this event, please RSVP by:

a) If at all possible, please use the Unigroup Registration Page:
http://www.unigroup.org/unigroup-rsvp.html
This will allow us to have some automation in the RSVP process.

b) If you must Email us, send an EMail containing the FIRST and
LAST NAMEs of the persons attending to the Unigroup RSVP address:
unigroup-rsvp-at-unigroup.org
The Email subject should start with "RSVP".
You may optionally include your contact phone number (that day)
or other current information.

DO NOT simply reply to this email, sending us back the entire
announcement (we already have it); leaving the subject as it
was, and NOT containing the phrase "RSVP" as requested. In
that case, your message just looks like failed mail and it
makes it impossible to automate the RSVP process and get
you registered for our event.

Please continue to check the Unigroup web site:
http://www.unigroup.org
for any last minute updates concerning this meeting. Please
check your email for any last minute announcements prior to the
meeting. Note that only the Attendee First and Last Names will
be provided to Chase Security.

Description of Talk:
--------------------

The Web has brought the ability to get access to information and
applications anyplace, anytime. But what about the millions of
so-called legacy applications written before HTML, XML, SOAP,
portals, etc. were invented? Do they have to be left out of the
revolution? Furthermore, what are the issues and solutions
surrounding remote access to such applications in general? Can
there really be a secure, well-managed virtual office? This talk
will examine these trends and describe solutions.

Topics to be discussed:

* Efficient delivery of fat X (and other) applications over
the web.
* Secure, wired and wireless access to legacy and web-enabled
applications.
* Software VPNs, firewall and proxy traversal.
* Web-enabling existing legacy applications without rewriting.
* Remote session management, remote help desking.
* Legacy application integration with Web-based portals.
* Cross-Platform Interconnectivity.
* Building a virtual office.
* A Java framework can be used to implement all of this.
Tarantella is mostly implemented via server-side Java.

Tarantella is planning a demo showing wireless application
connectivity from a handheld PDA/PC to a central server.

Giveaways:

We are also expecting a box of Linux CD-ROMs and other giveaways
from a major Linux vendor. If it arrives prior to the meeting,
we will post it to our web site.
