Brian,
This is just the kind of thing that frustrates me when I consider your
role on this list. You continue to dangle the virtual carrot by offering
free (as in beer) software and support despite Microsoft's claim that
the cost of their products can be justified in the value that its users
receive.
Why would you offer a free product? To me, you've just admitted that you
don't believe this person would have bought it in the first place. Since
you obviously agree, you figure that you'd better push a little harder
to get your product into that school even if it means eating the upfront
costs. You know Microsoft will make it back 10-fold come the next
upgrade cycle. In fact, let me tell you right now that I joined this
list because I heard that this kind of thing was happening and I needed
to see for myself.
The only reason you're offering a free copy of XP is because it will end
up getting used by students in a school and therefore, extend your
illegal monopoly. I am accusing you of using the people on this list to
strengthen your company's stranglehold on the flow of digital
information. Regardless of the fact that I'll surely get flamed by those
on the list who selfishly look to benefit (if even only short-term) from
your activity, I will not tolerate this and must ask you to stop.
When I first joined this list, I was asked to familiarize myself with
the group's philosophy statement. After reading it, I was pleased to see
that it contained language which indicated that this type of behavior
was frowned upon. More specifically, I remember reading that this list
should not be used to solicit a company's wares. Don't panic though, I'm
not suggesting that you have violated the current philosophy statement
since this section seems to have been removed. Regardless, I am
challenging you to recognize that this list is more than a bunch of "would
be customers" for you to exploit. I know several people from commercial
companies (yes, some Linux-based also) who have the dignity to
refrain from this type of solicitation and who do not splatter messages
with lengthy signatures designed to promote their company.
I'm tired of having to call you on this and think it is time to bring it
out into the open once and for all.
