The first ICs were developed in the 60s. TI made a calculator in 1967, it just used a custom IC, rather than a microprocessor. It could '+','-','*', and '/', and nothing else.
The 4004 was released 15 Nov 1971, and it was the first microprocessor. It immediately went into a handheld calculator, but the 4004 was capable of much more than the fixed hardware of the TI IC.
