SUBJECT RE: [hangout] Mepis

That seems to have helped.

The second hard drive wasnt being recognized (doi!).

XP doesnt boot now, but it seems the people I work with have taken a liking to
Mepis. Just wait till they get a load of Suse 9.1.

I gave a Mepis CD to a microsoft major. The guy cant wait to get home and
install it on his home computer. He works for some place doing MS support,
they want to back up their IT on Linux. He was very impressed with how Mepis
recognized the microturd network.

The next step is to get a few PCs running Linux. Then convert the stuff we
use behind the desk to assign students computers to Linux based. The back end
DB, etc.

When I first started talking about Linux everyone was asking me where to get
it. I told them 'just go to www.linuxiso.org and download it'. This dialogue
went on and on and on with no end in sight. "Just download it!" I would say
in frustration, "your a computer science major". They would ask me, I would
tell them where to go but no action on their part. Today I installed Linux on
the computer I gave out a few Mepis CD's and now they are interested. Its
that very very first step thats the biggest hurdle. They were even impressed
with the command line. Go figure. You could almost see their interest for
computers reignite. I have very little doubt that proprietary software is
probably one of the biggest banes of our society. How does someone *not*
loose interest when one is constantly being told 'its been done already and
there is no point in doing it anymore'. The passion for discovery and
development goes right out the window.

Seems like the self-proclaimed Linux desktop experts were wrong about Linux
*not* being ready for the desktop. Just plain wrong.

How do you quantify something like this?
I may drag some of their asses to technite just yet.
