Conclusions from the Conference= include the following:
- The Funding Climate ahead is going to be difficult for Arts=
Organizations in New York State. To survive and prosper,= organizations will have to be flexible enough to respond to external forces= and plan strategically. =20
- While September 11th can be viewed as a redefining moment and=
emotional watershed for many arts and cultural organizations, the current= challenges faced by these groups are largely due to the operative factors= cited above that have been in play to greater or lesser degrees for= years. The economy is really the issue that s the critical issue,= more than September 11.

the creative process through healing arts activities. Concerts,= mask making, poetry reading, special exhibitions, family activities, free= access to gardens and galleries all have provided the public with a= critical and necessary sense of solidarity Roman, Times">

- Partnerships will be key for the foreseeable future. Arts=
organizations will look to new arenas for collaboration. Many= partnerships might not be new, but the relationships in a post 9/11 world= will have to be more strategic. Times">
- For arts organizations to successfully embrace new roles in community=
and economic development, they must be prepared and comfortable to sit at= the table. Participants generally agreed that a level of confidence= building is needed. We need to prepare ourselves as leaders so that= we can step up to the plate. Training towards this end is= critical.
- The development of sound organizational structure including diverse,=
representative and strong boards of directors will be critical to meeting= challenges ahead and responding to opportunities that will present= themselves. =20

FROM THE UPSTATE OFFICE by Martha E.= Strodel, Rural Arts Director
It was good seeing so many of the= Rurals at the Alliance conference in New York City and to have so many of= you join the tenth Rurals Gathering throughout the afternoon. Below= is a condensed version of my notes from this session, which was focused on= getting your ideas for best practices/ways to design the program for your= future needs. The full notes will be posted on the Alliance website= ( eudora=3D"autourl">www.thealliancenys.org) and posted to the Rurals= listserv.
After a review of current services= provided by the Rural Arts Program, the group chose to make comments and= suggestions on a few of these:
=B7Site visits are important. They help connect us with the= statewide community, provide personalized assistance and help new directors= begin to connect and focus.
=B7The workshops for boards are important, but it would increase= effectiveness to pay the workshop leader to then come & work directly= with a board.
=B7Expand the parameters of the Lean on Me mentoring program to= include travel money for a new director to visit other= organizations/directors in the field.
Rural Issues, Needs & Suggestions
=B7Issue: changing demographics, audiences, donors and the need= to be a bridgebuilder in rural communities. Increase in numbers of= artists and residents moving full time to rural areas.
Need: useful statistics to prove case.
Suggestions: Develop template survey tool to acquire statistics; hold= workshops on how to survey these changes.
=B7Issue: increased demand for services & programs with limited= resources.
Need: planning and better management of time &= resources. To do this, need effective boards & staff and means to= evaluate.
Suggestions: information, models & workshops on evaluation tools,= good board practices, board development, organizational needs assessment,= personnel policies. Alliance could bring people together to= review case histories on organizational situations/issues.
=B7Issue: high level of staff turnover: too many hours at too little= pay. Little training in a complex job.
=B7Issue: fewer and changing financial resources post 9/11.
Need: to re-strengthen our case for the arts in the economic= redevelopment/growth in our towns, cities, counties.
Suggestions:
---use existing samples of effective economic impact studies, college= resources or economic development groups to get local/regional studies= done.
---Alliance is working to develop Cultural Zones across the= State. Develop survey template for local use using existing models to= outline what to ask, whom to ask; coordinate economic development studies,= keep statistics for everyone and communicate what others are doing.
Need: to develop new resources & earned income.
Suggestions: Reassessment of income sources. Communicate who is= doing what to make money. Look at strategies to raise money locally. = Change mindset externally & internally re non-profit status & the= ability to earn income. Contract with government entities for= services ; partner with local businesses to promote the arts &= business.
=B7Issue: assistance for emerging & all volunteer= groups; help existing organizations get stronger.
Need: technical assistance in such areas as board development;= board & staff evaluation, strategic planning
Suggestions: regional workshops, use of case studies.
RAISE MONEY ONLINE= FROM INDIVIDUAL DONORS: Workshop 11/14
Topics to be covered= include: Planning your online fundraising campaigns--Making your= website more effective, without spending a lot of money-- Opening channels= of communications with your offline donors, Using email and the Web-Driving= potential donors to your website--Understanding what's realistic for your= organization and what to expect from online fundraising. face=3D"Times New Roman, Times" size=3D2>This workshop is for organizations= of all sizes that have websites and at least one staff member working to= raise money from individual donors.
