I can't help but remember a conversation I once had with a roulette
player who did not understand that he was simply playing a bad game due
to the fact that the payout (34 to 1) was not proportionate to the level
of risk (37 to 1) involved. After about 30 minutes of trying to explain this, I
realized that he would just keep playing his silly game regardless of
how much logic I bestowed onto him. The reason was simple: it was the
only game that he knew. Ignorance can be so powerful...

I think the funniest part of the response below is how anyone could
think that a Microsoft employee could be giving anything away for free.
Are we talking about upfront dollar costs alone? If so, fine. We have
now established the fact that we are able to grasp the small picture
(which quite honestly, does not impress me). What I am talking about is
something a bit broader in scope. DRM and TCPA will have a significant
impact on our society (more so of course as the numbers of misled and
apathetic "users" spend their money on its ground-level infrastructure).

More specifically, these technologies will cripple our ability to
communicate, innovate, and protect our private data from "trusted"
sources. Now that we've peeked out and seen a glimpse of this reality,
do we still think that Windows 2003 can ever be free? The answer is no.
Windows 2003, regardless of how it is obtained has many long terms costs and I'll
go as far to say that anyone who authorizes its use in an educational
institution is totally irresponsible and should be fired.

I am disappointed that so many people on this list fail to see the
significance in the views that I have expressed and are short-sighted
enough to see my comments as anything but something that may threaten
their ability to run after the bones that are being tossed out by our
friendly neighborhood Microsoft representative. Yet, I remain encouraged
by many others on the list that do "get it" and are obviously working
hard to improve the quality of their services for the benefit of their
environment and its users. Keep up the good work!

Adam Kosmin

" " " Good morning Terry,
" " "
" " " You have a good list started. As you know, I like the Linux/E-smith
" " server " options, but have had years of experience managing that
" " environment. There " are some nice options for Win32 servers listed
" " down below, but first...my " opinion (which you are more than welcome to
" " fast-forward past and get to " the $md stuff .... {grin} ) "
" " " Instead of the EZMLM list-server package (which is superb), I'm using
" " " Mailman as our list-server (also superb). It has features galore, and
" " then " some. I also would suggest the Geeklog CMS as a "one-stop-center"
" " that can " do many of the things you list in an integrated,
" " easy-to-manage system, " including a file management add-in. Abe has
" " done a great job (actually a " GREAT job) of putting the TechGeeks
" " website together and making it easy to " use, both from an end-user
" " standpoint, a contributor's standpoint, and a " site manager's
" " standpoint. Maintenance is an administrator's dream. He " has also set
" " up Geeklog for one of Area V's projects, the ITS-REAL Grant " (see
" " http://216.125.202.199/itsreal/) Check it out to see another very nice "
" " rendition. "
" " " For document storage and exchange (on E-smith), check out FileExchange
" " " (http://www.tech-geeks.org/article.php?story=20021125155140376)
" " " or WebShare
" " " (http://contribs.org/contribs/dmay/mitel/contrib/webshare/)
" " "
" " " I could go on and on about the advantages/disadvantages of list-serves
" " " and/or forums and/or CMS and/or Portals and/or newsgroups and the "
" " fascinating sociology of each. Bottom line (IMHO): The adage "if you
" " build " it, they will come" only works if there is inherent value to the
" " end " user. It seems pretty evident that the tech-geeks list-serve has
" " been " successful in attracting the people that it was intended to
" " reach. I'm not " sure a newsgroup or threaded discussion forum would
" " have had the same " impact. Basically an information "push-pull" issue.
" " "
" " " OK...finally...the free stuff.
" " " Here are some very nice options for the Win32 IIS server that has all

" " the " ASP.NET Forums...", which sounds like you can take it and run with
" " it if " you are so inclined. "
" " " From their description: "It's absolutely free and takes only minutes
" " to " install!" " "This toolkit requires Windows 2000, Windows XP
" " Professional, or Window " Server 2003, the Microsoft? .NET? Framework

" " "
" " " Here's a live sample: http://www.stpworks.com/Forums/
" " " (and while you're looking at STPWorks, check out this guy's very sweet
" " " "Database Administrator" and "Newsletter Manager" apps in the

" " " The DotNetNuke CMS also looks appealing.
