That brings me back to your suspicions. Maybe someone involved in the conference is ignorant or naive, and thinks it would be clever to have MS in the lineup. Think of the press it would generate! And there's no way they could come out looking good with all of those penetrating questions they'll be asked. Right? What could they possibly do or say?
My memory is not certain, but I think Tony told me there was pressure from higher-ups (in the university) to have a "Microsoft presence". I am certain he told me they were under pressure to hush up talk about free software idealism; I am just not certain whether he said there was specific pressure to include Microsoft.
They did this because they were under pressure themselves. Where that pressure originated, I am not sure, but I suppose it came indirectly from Microsoft by way of other organizations. Regardless of the precise details, the whole thing is sleazy.
