What a horrifying tale - completely aside from 'Voz Is Neis?' (What's News?) speaking with a disturbing lack of tact concerning a grieving family.
Speaking strictly of my own experience with smoke detectors, over the past decade the only problem I've had with them is them sometimes starting to emit low-battery beeps in the middle of the night, but I've not had that happen since adopting a firm policy of brand-new 9V batteries for all of them, every autumn.
(We also have a separate CO2 detector, now required by law in my state for some construction.)
Aluv ha sholem.
