No, this is wrong. Yes, her message DID identify old white men as a
class of individuals to vilify.
The use of the word hysterical is 100% correct. The arguments are
hysterical and NO, I don't care if someone objects to using the correct
term. If this is a war over language, which it is, I am no conceding
the term hysterical to a bunch of fanatics who chose to misapropriate
valid language. It is a fact that her post was a rant, and hysterical.
It is also cruel, and vicious.
She claimed that RMS supported raping children, which is absolutely
false, then said that despite the fact that she has never been
mistreated by him that his is guilty of preventing women from
participating, which is a second false statement. And then she used the
second false statment to rant that the FSF and GNU should behave like
NBC and other corperate entities because bad publicity should not
allowed. And that is hysteria. She saw a minor little bad publicity
and had a grossly irrational emotional reaction.... Hysteria.
Hysteria:
an uncontrollable outburst of emotion or fear, often characterized by
irrationality, laughter, weeping, etc.
Psychoanalysis. a psychoneurotic disorder characterized by violent
emotional outbreaks, disturbances of sensory and motor functions, and
various abnormal effects due to autosuggestion.
Both of these definitions are 100% valid to her message.
The fact that she wrote her letter like a high school engish student
learning how to write oppositional text from the Norton Reader, doesn't
cover up that the message was dishonest and an example of hysteria.
The standard model of oppositional writing learned in middle schools and
high school across the English world...
1) Introduce yourself and create standing
2) Concede points to the opposition
3) Argue your points against the oppositions points you outline.
This is 9th grade garbage, but it doesn't validate the tools of yellow
journalism such as hysteria, expansion of your facts by exaggeration,
lying about the opposition, flaming emotionalism by talking to and
addressing people outside the intended audience, degenerating an entire
class of people, repeating untruths, and a disregard for personal
responsibility.
So I will repeat it here.
Richard Stallman is not a child molester and neither is the GNU
Leadership. Nor do they support raping children. Nor do they in any
way discriminate against women, formally or informally.
Stallman, and much of the FSF and GNU are lazer focused the impact that
digital systems have on individual freedom. They are libertarians, and
care about human rights, INCLUDING the right to being presumed innocent
and to be free of government harassment and abuse.
As such, Richard has pondered the logic of use of hot button political
and social issues as they are used as tools by the state for repression,
including instances of when people have sex with minors. And he is
right to have these questions and follow them to wherever logic and
evidence might pursue them to, whether that upsets a class or radical
feminists and their supporters or not. It is an open question that is
worth investigating. It is not support for raping children, or goats.
It is just using logic to thing outside the box.
After all, we continue to struggle with these issues and nearly a month
goes by when the rags are hysterically reporting on inappropriate
relations between school teachers and students... and the public can't
get enough of it. You think it is criminal for Stallman to worry about
the effects that the emotionalism of these cases has on human rights?
Well, I don't and neither does any thinking person who cares about human
rights and people.
Now, as an aside to this, you might, in your prancing about and trying
to hang RMS for questioning our foundations of sexual behaviors, recall
the case of Mary Cathleen Collins. You can look it up. At the age of
16 she has a torrid affair with 46 year old John Derek. He was married.
They moved to Germany because in California that was statutory rape.
They married and REMAINED happily married until his death in 1998.
Then there is the story of Michelle Philips... you can look that one up.
Regardless, now you can get crossed eyed and hysteria and call me a
supporter of child molestation.
Now one more point. It is the job of the FSF and GNU to create
political agitation with regard to software, copyrights and human
rights. They are NOT IBM or a commercial entity. They MUST remain
steadfastly behind RMS in this situation, as Richard did NOTHING wrong
other than tick a few people off over a minor political flap. It is OK
for the FSF to proudly stand behind RMS and his record as an agitator
for justice and software freedom. Doing otherwise speaks very badly for
the FSF. I will not support them, nor should others, as long as his
remains a pariah and mistreated.
